Central Region Benefits from New Recreation Infrastructure

Through the Capital Grant Program, the Provincial Government has invested $30,000 in Grand Falls-Windsor and Triton to help with the purchase of new recreation equipment and infrastructure. The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor has been provided with $15,000 to purchase equipment for recreational programming and the Trinton Recreation Commission has been given $15,000 for the construction of a new tennis court.

“One of the main objectives of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, is to increase participation in recreation, sport, and physical activity,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “By supporting these communities and their efforts to encourage residents to get physically active, we are closer to reaching our goal.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province.

“The Provincial Government continuously commits to recreation and sport infrastructure in the province, as it is vital to the sustainability of healthy communities,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans. “This investment will enable the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor to continue offering top-notch recreational programs and activities for people of all ages.”

The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor and the Triton Recreation Commission are among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“Funding for sports is great for this area and the people of Triton will welcome these tennis courts,” said Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South. “It is necessary to provide quality facilities so that people can explore new sports and activities.”

Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy in 2007, more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
