New Recreational Infrastructure Benefits Macdonald Drive Elementary
Macdonald Drive Elementary will receive new indoor/outdoor physical activity equipment thanks in part to $15,000 provided through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program.
“This funding will be used to assist with the purchase of various pieces of fitness equipment and a sound system to help improve student, teacher and staff wellness,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to promoting healthy, active, and fun activities to the citizens of our communities.”
Macdonald Drive Elementary is among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.
“Healthy bodies mean healthy minds and better achievement,” said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Virginia Waters. “It is important that we encourage our children to make positive choices in terms of their health and fitness and this funding helps ensure Macdonald Drive Elementary has the right equipment to do just that."
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
