Elementary School Benefits from
Recreational Infrastructure Investment

Cowan Heights Elementary School has received $15,000 in support from the Provincial Government Capital Grant Program to assist with the purchase and installation of new playground equipment.

“This funding will help offset the cost of purchasing a new swing set and climbing equipment for the school’s playground area,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to assist schools create a safe environment for students to participate in healthy and fun outdoor activities.”

Cowan Heights Elementary is among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“Cowan Heights Elementary has an excellent reputation for promoting physical activity among its students and I am absolutely delighted that this funding will allow the school to further enhance their recreation program,” said Sheila Osborne, MHA for St. John’s West.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a total annual investment of $1.3 million to the Capital Grant Program. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
