Labrador West Benefits from $15,000 Recreational Infrastructure Investment

Labrador West Young People’s Association has received $15,000 through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program to assist with the purchase of fitness and recreational equipment for the community youth centre.

“This funding will be used to help with the purchase and installation of equipment such as floor mats, canopied tents, and staging for the centre’s new Stand up, Get Active Program,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to assist in projects that provide healthy and fun indoor and outdoor activities.”

Labrador West is among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

"This is great news for the youth of Labrador West, as this organization provides a tremendous service for our young people,” said Jim Baker, MHA for Labrador West. “This funding will go a long way in enabling the Labrador West Young People’s Association to continue and to expand on their programs that promote a healthy lifestyle through physical activity."

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
