Cultural Investment Provided to New World Theatre
The New World Theatre Project, which produces and presents professional classical theatre in Cupids, has been granted $30,000 through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program.
“The New World Theatre Project, developed to help celebrate the Cupids 400 celebration last year, is now entering its second exciting season,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This initiative presents classical works, providing a unique cultural experience for its audience.”
The main stage performance space for the project is The Indeavour Stage, an interpretation of an open air Elizabethan playhouse, located in Cupids. The summer season performances will run until August 28.
“The Provincial Government has shown a solid commitment to fostering initiatives that help showcase our unique culture and our rich and storied history,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works and MHA for Harbour Main. “This funding will assist New World Theatre in the development of a vital theatre program to celebrate the talents of theatre artists.”
Brad Hodder, Artistic Director of the New World Theatre Project is excited about the upcoming season.
"We are proud of the artists with whom we create, and we are excited by the plays we get to bring to life,” said Mr. Hodder. “These timeless stories become part of our shared narrative. This work is important and the Provincial Government's commitment is necessary and valued. With support from programs such as the Cultural Economic Development Program, the New World Theatre Project can continue to challenge and inspire both artists and audiences as the only classically mandated professional company in Newfoundland and Labrador."
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $2.9 million through its Cultural Economic Development Program to support arts, cultural, and heritage initiatives throughout the province.
