Community Recreation Programming Enhanced Province-wide

Over $606,000 is being provided to support local recreation programming through the 2011 Community Recreation Development Grants Program.

“By providing continued support to our local recreation and sport committees, the residents of the province are being offered a variety of opportunities to become more physically active,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “I commend the efforts of committee members for their drive and commitment to building a more active, healthy Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The Community Recreation Development Grants Program is an application-based program designed to help offset the cost of general recreation, sport and active-living programs in communities with fewer than 6,000 people.

Over 180 communities will benefit from the grants provided, one of those communities being the Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove where today’s announcement took place.

"While this funding is a welcomed contribution to our recreational infrastructure, more importantly, it is an investment in the health and overall well-being of residents in the town,” said Kevin Parsons, MHA for Cape St. Francis. “Providing enhanced opportunities for recreation in the community will assist in encouraging residents to get out and become more physically active.”

“Recreational development grants that we have received from the Provincial Government enhance and extend our recreation programs so that they can be run year round,” said John Kennedy, Mayor of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove. “We have also been able to develop and offer new programs for youth, adults and seniors.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since 2007, more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming and athlete development throughout the province.
