Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Receives Funding for New Soccer Field
The Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s has received $15,000 through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program to help with costs associated with the development of a soccer field.
“This funding will be used to help with the construction of a second soccer field in an effort to accommodate the ever increasing numbers of young soccer players within the town,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Facilities such as this are a vital part of the physical, recreational, and social activities in the community.”
The Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s is among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.
“This announcement will help to forward the agendas of the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s and the Provincial Government in their efforts to have citizens more engaged in recreational activities,” said David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island. “This funding is another example of how a partnership between the municipality and the Provincial Government is achieving this goal.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
