Over $82,000 Invested in the Cultural Community
Various organizations and individuals operating within the cultural community of Newfoundland and Labrador received $82,778 through the latest round of funding approved by the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program.
“The Provincial Government is committed to supporting professional artists in Newfoundland and Labrador in the creation and advancement of their work,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This investment provides funding to a number of cultural initiatives and will help with the continued growth of the cultural industry, which is an important contributor to the Newfoundland and Labrador economy.”

The Cultural Economic Development Program is a support program designed to stimulate economic activity by providing financial support for heritage and professional arts activities.
The arts component of the Cultural Economic Development Program is intended to help increase earned incomes for professional artists, expand cultural products, contribute to the growth of economic activity within the arts sector, and support the development of the cultural tourism industry.
Eligible sectors include visual arts, music, theatre, dance, literary arts, film and video, and new media. Projects are selected based on the strength of the business plan, vision, and potential development within the sector. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $2.9 million through its Cultural Economic Development Program to support arts, cultural, and heritage initiatives throughout the province.

- Tuckamore Festival - $8,000 for expenses associated with marketing its 11th season on August 7-21
- Andy Jones - $7,500 to offset costs associated with touring The Queen of Paradise’s Garden to festivals and selected showcases
- Friends of Writers at Woody Point - $6,500 to offset costs associated with the annual Writers at Woody Point Festival on August 16-21
- Bonavista Historical Townscape Foundation - $5,000 to assist with the Saturday Summer Music Series continuing until October 29
- Exploits Valley Economic Development Corporation - $5,000 to offset costs associated with presenting Art Ex (Visual Arts in the Exploits Valley), a contemporary arts festival held in July
- Rock Island Productions - $5,000 to provide project support for website creation for its new feature film Hold Fast
- Shakespeare by the Sea Festival - $5,000 to provide project support for professional development activities
- Southern Shore Folk Arts Council - $5,000 to offset costs associated with presenting the 25th Annual Shamrock Festival on July 23-24
- Winterset in Summer - $5,000 to provide support to assist with the 10th Annual Literary Festival in Eastport on August 12-14
- White Rooster Theatre - $5,000 in project support to help with expenses associated with the tour of MonaRita to four major Canadian festivals between July and September
- Atlantic Presenters Association - $4,626 to offset costs associated with offering a professional development workshop
- Cape St. Mary’s Performance Series - $4,000 to help support the performance series held at the Cape St. Mary’s Interpretation Centre continuing until September 10
- Battery Radio - $3,928 to assist with costs associated with screenings of radio documentaries at European festivals
- Literary Arts Foundation - $3,655 to support marketing activities associated with the 2011 Pipers Firth writers’ retreat being held October 25-29 in Swift Current
- Veselina Tomova - $3,550 to offset costs associated with travel to Sofia, Bulgaria, to organize and attend the opening of her solo exhibit Ports at the National Art Gallery of Bulgaria, to run October 20 to September 13
- Margaret Walsh Best - $2,019 to provide project support for the touring of the exhibition Balancing Act: Invasive Alien Plants
- St. John’s Storytelling Festival - $2,000 to offset costs associated with storyteller Dan Yashinsky facilitating a two-day masters’ storytelling workshop in St. John’s, October 2-3
- Beni Malone - $2,000 to travel to Finland where he has been invited by Cirque Dracula to present on Wonderbolt Productions and participate in development activities
