Projecting Newfoundland and Labrador in Toronto

On Wednesday July 6, larger-than-life film footage of some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most iconic sights began projecting on buildings in downtown Toronto at Bloor east of Spadina, Richmond west of Jarvis and Eglinton east of Allen Expressway. The projections will continue today (Thursday, July 7) and tomorrow (Friday, July 8) starting at 9:30 p.m. intermittently for two hours.

“Newfoundland and Labrador is a place full of the unexpected, from incredible natural wonders to expressions of art around every corner,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “These projections are a celebration of some of the things that make our province so unique and an ideal destination to escape the daily grind, heat and humidity of city life. The best way to communicate a message to people is to show them, rather than tell them. That’s what these projections are all about.”

The province welcomed an unprecedented 518,500 non-resident visitors last year, an increase of 7.3 per cent over the previous year (2009). This was the first time the half-million mark was reached and exceeded in Newfoundland and Labrador. Expenditures by non-resident visitors were over $410 million. Since 2003, the Provincial Government has more than doubled its tourism marketing budget from $6 million to $13 million, and has created an award-winning marketing campaign.
