Media Advisory: Minister to Launch New Exhibit at Commissariat House

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will officially launch a new exhibit at Commissariat House Provincial Historic Site, St. John’s, tomorrow (Friday, June 24). The event will take place at Commissariat House, on the corner of King's Bridge Road and Military Road beginning at 11:00 a.m. Parking is available off King’s Bridge Road.

The new multi-media exhibit at the site brings to life the political and social scene in the 1830s, a time of change for representative government in Newfoundland. The exhibit traces the rhetoric of the colony’s citizens from pulpits to pubs, in petitions, pamphlets, and the press. Built as the home and office of the Assistant Commissary General, the supply officer for British forces in Newfoundland, Commissariat House was once one of the finest houses on the island.
