Communities Invited to Apply for Capital Grant Programs

The Provincial Government is accepting applications from communities and other organizations for Capital Grant Programs 2011-12. The programs assist communities in the development of small-scale indoor or outdoor capital recreation projects.

“Capital grants are available to municipalities, community groups, and others so that appropriate recreation and sport infrastructure can be provided to residents throughout the province,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “We want to help offset the cost of conserving existing recreation facilities and developing new small-scale facilities.”

Examples of projects to conserve existing community recreation facilities include minor roof repairs, furnaces, ice-chilling equipment, outdoor rink repairs, and the replacement of playground equipment. Examples of projects to support the development of new small-scale facilities include playgrounds, skiing trails, and multi-purpose courts.

The deadline to submit applications to Capital Grant Programs is June 4, 2011. Program guidelines and application forms are available on the Provincial Government’s website, under the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation’s section on Recreation and Sport: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/sports/index.html.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a total annual investment of $1.3 million to Capital Grant Programs for communities. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
