New Chair Appointed to Marble Mountain Development Corporation’s Board of Director

Marble Mountain Development Corporation (MMDC) has a new chair at the helm of its board of directors: Bob Pike. The appointment of Mr. Pike to the five-year term was announced today by the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

“We are delighted to appoint Mr. Pike to this important role,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Marble Mountain is a cornerstone for tourism on the west coast and is the province’s premiere winter attraction. Mr. Pike’s experience and passion for Marble Mountain will help lead the corporation and further its goals.”

Mr. Pike served on the board of directors of MMDC since 2009. As well as having a solid background in business and community activities, he is an avid skier who is committed to Marble Mountain. He will chair the upcoming board meeting at Marble Mountain on April 27.

Jamie Schwartz, the former chair of MMDC, ended his term on January 31, 2011. He served on the board of directors for seven years prior to being appointed chair in 2008.

“Mr. Schwartz’s work for the Marble Mountain Development Corporation was outstanding,” said Minister French. “I thank him for his tireless contribution to the development of Marble.”

MMDC was established in April 1988 as a Crown corporation to plan and oversee the development of Marble Mountain. In 2001, governance of MMDC was transferred to the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. The responsibility for appointing the board of directors rests with the Provincial Government through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador invests $1.4 million to implement new tourism initiatives. Working with destination management organizations and the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Board, the goal is to double tourism revenue by 2020 by following the strategic directions outlined in Uncommon Potential: A Vision for Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism (Vision 2020). Since 2003, the Provincial Government has more than doubled its tourism marketing budget from $6 million to $13 million, and has created an award-winning marketing campaign.
