Additional $277,550 Invested in Community Recreation and Sports Projects
The Provincial Government, through the Minor Project Capital Grant Program, has invested $277,550 in 135 municipalities, community recreation organizations and schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to assist with the costs associated with upgrades to existing equipment and facilities. This funding is in addition to the $142,000 invested in more than 90 recreation organizations and municipalities this past fall.
“In an effort to support the Provincial Government’s commitment to increase participation in physical activity, $419,550 has been provided to community recreation and sport projects throughout the province since September 2010,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This funding assists organizations in offering quality recreation and physical activity programs to community residents.”

Successful applicants of this program receive grants between $1,000 to $3,000 for projects that support physical activity and recreational opportunities for residents within a community and surrounding region. Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future provided about $7 million through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation to support recreation and sport initiatives. This included over $1.3 million in new funding. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
