Law Enforcement Torch Run and MUN Sea-Hawks Host
Special Olympics Basketball Camp

On Saturday, March 19, members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) along with the MUN Sea-Hawks basketball teams will be hosting a basketball camp for Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Athletes. The camp is being used as an introduction to the sport for Special Olympians. Over 80 athletes will take part in two sessions being held at the RCMP headquarters in the White Hills.

“The LETR have been the main supporter of Special Olympics and its athletes since their inception and that commitment has never wavered. Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador is also proud of their association with the Sea-Hawks and are looking forward to having them work with our athletes,” says Executive Director, Nelson White.

Athletes will learn basic basketball skills, take part in some games, plus be treated to an exhibition by the Sea-Hawk players. Special Olympic coaches will also receive instruction in hopes of growing the sport of basketball throughout the province.

Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador is dedicated to enriching the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans with an intellectual disability through sport. It is a provincial not-for-profit grassroots organization that provides sport training and competition opportunities for over 550 athletes of all ages and abilities. There are currently 13 community-based clubs that offer sport programs. Through sport, Special Olympics offers athletes and families a sense of achievement and an opportunity to excel, as they take on leadership roles within their community.
