Team Newfoundland and Labrador on the Podium – Again!

Team Newfoundland and Labrador have reached the podium once again. Today, target shooter Ben Taylor won a second bronze medal at the 2011 Canada Winter Games – this time in the individual air rifle competition.

On Monday, February 14, Mr. Taylor and Jason Harnum won Team Newfoundland and Labrador’s first medal at the games in the team air rifle competition. Mr. Harnum finished fifth in today’s individual competition.

“The sport of shooting requires a tremendous amount of training both physically and mentally,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “I commend Ben for his dedication and for being honoured not once, but twice at the country’s most prestigious athletic competition.”

A native of St. John’s, Mr. Taylor has been shooting for 10 years and competing for three. In 2010 on the national level, he competed at the Canadian Air Gun Grand Prix, where he was ranked fourth in the expert class (international match). He also placed sixth in the junior class and seventh in the men’s air rifle expert class at the Canadian Small Bore Rifle Championships. In addition, he was named provincial champion and three-time junior champion at the 2010 Provincial Air Rifle Championships.

Team Newfoundland and Labrador is made up of a contingent of more than 200 athletes, volunteer coaches, managers and mission staff. During these games, the team will be represented by 15 teams, participating in 13 sports.

The 2011 Canada Winter Games are being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, February 11-27. For the latest information, updates and results for Team Newfoundland and Labrador during the 2011 Canada Winter Games, visit: www.teamnl.ca/
