Appleton Rink First in Province to Use Synthetic Ice Surface

To further enhance recreational opportunities in central Newfoundland, the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, was pleased to announce today that the Provincial Government will cost share the purchase of a synthetic ice system with the Town of Appleton. Joining Minister O’Brien at the announcement was Derm Flynn, Mayor of Appleton.

“This is a truly exciting and innovative opportunity for not only Appleton and the surrounding communities, but all of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister O’Brien. “The purchase of a synthetic ice surface brings increased recreation opportunities for area residents and it will also serve as a demonstration facility for other communities who are interested in synthetic ice.”

The Provincial Government is cost sharing the approximately $150,000 purchase of the synthetic ice system on a 90/10 provincial/municipal basis with Appleton. Included in the purchase is synthetic ice for a 55 x 110 foot rink, professional standard rink boards and glass, safety netting and regulation hockey nets. The synthetic ice system is called the Ice-Y-Blue 700™ technology and is supplied and installed by IcePro. The equipment is two years old and was used as part of a demonstration facility in the Halifax area.

“This is truly an exciting time for Appleton as in the near future we will have an outdoor rink which can be used all year,” said Mayor Flynn. “This was a unique opportunity for our community and I am pleased the Provincial Government agreed to help us make it a reality. I look forward to the installation of the new rink and I encourage municipal leaders from across the province to come and see this new facility once it is operational.”

Synthetic ice surfaces are engineered from high-density polyethylene, are suitable for year round indoor or outdoor use and do not require costly refrigeration systems. Minimal maintenance, such as vacuuming and washing and the application of a glide enhancing fluid, is needed and thus operational costs are low. The synthetic surface will be installed on an outdoor playing surface already available in Appleton.

“Surfaces such as this are used throughout Europe and are becoming increasingly popular in Canada and the rest of the world,” said Minister O’Brien. “Appleton has always been a leader in piloting unique technologies in our province and I commend Mayor Flynn and council for taking the initiative to be the first community in Newfoundland and Labrador to use synthetic ice. I look forward to the amazing impact this facility will have for all hockey players and recreational skaters in the area.”
