Grand Falls-Windsor Plays Host to Emergency Responders

Fire and Emergency Services Training School is underway in Grand Falls-Windsor this week, bringing hundreds of firefighters and municipal officials to central Newfoundland. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today congratulated the more than 350 individuals registered for training courses in emergency management and firefighting fundamentals.

“This training school continues a regional initiative underway since 2008 and I am pleased to see so many members of our municipal services stepping up to ensure the safety and security of volunteers and residents,” said Minister O’Brien. “Training is an important way to help improve the level of emergency preparedness among responders and it is very encouraging that there is such a great turnout in Grand Falls-Windsor.

This year’s Fall Training School is the eighth offered by Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) and the third opportunity offered in central Newfoundland. FES-NL has also coordinated basic courses in a number of other communities including Harbour Breton, St. Bride’s, Flower’s Cove, Meadows, Port aux Choix, and Springdale with a further registration of more than 100 participants. Throughout the week, those registered will have access to a dedicated team of trainers well versed in the latest techniques in firefighting and emergency management.

Minister O’Brien noted that Emergency Operations Centre Management, Basic Emergency Management and Fire Department Operations are just a few of the many courses which will be underway over the next few days. The minister reiterated the Provincial Government remains committed to bolstering and strengthening fire and emergency services throughout the province and will continue to support communities in their efforts to ensure they are in the best position possible to respond to whatever challenges may arise.

The Provincial Government has provided $30,000 to offer a 50/50 cost-share arrangement to assist with the travel and accommodation expenses incurred by municipalities in sending individuals to Fire and Emergency Services Training School.
