Public Advisory: Public Safety Encouraged During Severe Weather System

Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) is reminding residents that public and personal safety should be everyone’s top priority during a severe weather system moving through the province. Rain and high winds expected throughout today (Wednesday, October 5) and tomorrow (Thursday, October 6) can be expected to bring high waves and pounding surf in coastal areas, potential water build-up, rising water levels, and challenging driving conditions.

Of particular concern are forecasted strong northerly winds for the Baie Verte and Northern Peninsulas tonight. The public is reminded to pay particular attention to local weather forecasts and not to take any unnecessary risks while intense weather is underway.

FES-NL staff have been monitoring the forecast in conjunction with Environment Canada and have been in contact with communities throughout central Newfoundland, the west coast and Northern Peninsula that may be of particular concern. Along with the Department of Transportation and Works and emergency service providers, FES-NL is available to provide advice and assistance to communities should the situation warrant.

Residents and officials should keep the following emergency numbers close at hand:
