Public Advisory: Public Encouraged to Monitor Weekend Weather Forecasts for Potential Storm Systems
Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) is encouraging all residents and communities to pay particular attention to weekend weather forecasts and be ready in the event of a severe storm over the next few days.
In conjunction with Environment Canada and the Canadian Hurricane Center, FES-NL officials are monitoring the potential effects of Hurricane Ophelia, which could bring high wind and heavy rains to Newfoundland and Labrador. Weather officials indicate there remains significant uncertainty around this particular storm system. Details are anticipated to become clearer over the next 24 to 48 hours. Residents are reminded that hurricane season is still underway and while the province has been fortunate so far in 2011, there remains the possibility strong storms could impact any given region.
The public should be mindful of the weather forecast and take precautions where necessary. Further advisories may be forthcoming throughout the weekend should the weather forecast warrant.
