Public Advisory: Strong Wave Activity Anticipated for Severe Weather System

In an effort to ensure public safety during the effects of Hurricane Maria, Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) is advising residents to be cautious around waterways and coastlines throughout the coming days.

Officials with Environment Canada and the Canadian Hurricane Center predict strong wave activity across the island and into Labrador associated with the weather systems now moving through the area. In particular, western Newfoundland, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Labrador coast, and the Strait of Belle Isle could see storm surge conditions and waves reaching four to nine metres. Strong wave activity is also anticipated along the northeast coast.

FES-NL encourages residents to be mindful of these conditions throughout the weekend, and avoid coastal areas if at all possible. Conditions may be severely hazardous and emergency management officials warn journeying close to the water to watch the storm will pose significant risk.

Residents are reminded to keep attuned to the latest weather forecast for further warnings and advisories from weather experts and take measures to ensure personal safety is top priority.
