Bonavista to Receive New Rescue Vehicle

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced the Town of Bonavista will receive a new firefighting vehicle, as part of an unprecedented investment in the municipal fire service.

“The Provincial Government has dedicated significant resources this year to upgrade and modernize firefighting vehicles throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister O’Brien. “I realize the importance of supporting our communities in their efforts to protect the members of the fire service with modern vehicles, as they work to protect the residents of our province.”

Bonavista will receive a new rescue vehicle through an 80/20 cost-share arrangement with the Provincial Government. Public tenders for new firefighting vehicles will be let this summer, with delivery expected in 2012.

“Residents in the Bonavista region know all too well the amazing work of volunteer firefighters, especially following their most recent response effort during Hurricane Igor,” said the Honourable Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South. “There is obvious respect and admiration for these brave individuals throughout the region. This new vehicle will be able to act as a mobile command post during emergency situations and will serve both firefighters and residents well the next time a dangerous situation materializes.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a historic investment in the municipal fire service. The Provincial Government has invested $3.9 million towards new firefighting vehicles, as well as a continued $1 million allocation to fund equipment needs to assist communities. In addition, a new Provincial Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit to acknowledge the commitment of the men and women in the volunteer fire service has been introduced. In total, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $6 million towards the municipal fire service this year.
