New Firefighting Vehicle Announced for Lourdes

As part of the unprecedented funding announced this year for municipal fire services, the community of Lourdes will receive a new firefighting vehicle in spring 2012.

“We have received many requests to assist towns and communities in purchasing these large vehicles,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. “The Provincial Government recognizes and appreciates the challenges in our rural communities and we are pleased this year to provide a level of support to the municipal fire service never before seen in our history. Together, we will help to modernize the equipment of such an important municipal service.”

Lourdes will receive a new firefighting pumper truck through a 90/10 cost-share arrangement with the Provincial Government. Public tenders for new firefighting vehicles will be let this summer, with delivery expected in 2012.

“This announcement helps to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the Lourdes Regional Fire Department,” said Tony Cornect, MHA for Port au Port. “I am proud to work with firefighters throughout the region in an effort to make sure our men and women have the tools they need to do their job effectively.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $3.9 million for new firefighting vehicles. As well, $1 million is allocated to fund equipment needs to assist communities. With the addition of a new Provincial Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit to acknowledge the commitment of the men and women in the volunteer fire service, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $6 million towards the municipal fire service this year.
