Municipal Capital Works Announced for Bonavista Peninsula Communities

Communities on the Bonavista Peninsula will receive $1.2 million from the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program to complete important municipal infrastructure projects.

“The results of this investment will be improved water and road infrastructure, along with an improved space for fire protection services,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “I am pleased to see the work of municipal cooperation come to fruition, especially for the communities that are part of the Town of Trinity Bay North.”

The Town of Bonavista will receive support to upgrade a water transmission line to provide enhanced water quality to residents. As per the annexation Memorandum of Understanding between Trinity Bay North and Little Catalina, water and sewer upgrades will take place in the community as will a variety of road improvements. To accommodate a new rescue vehicle, an extension will be built to the Little Catalina fire hall.

“Residents of these communities have demonstrated a willingness to work together to provide enhanced municipal services,” said the Honourable Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South. “Improvements to water and wastewater services along with road improvements and an extension to the fire hall at Little Catalina will benefit the residents of Trinity Bay North for years to come. Bonavista receives numerous visitors every year for its wonderful scenery and engaging people and this water transmission line upgrade will provide improved drinking water for visitors and residents alike.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
