Mount Pearl to Benefit from Municipal Capital Works Funding
The City of Mount Pearl will receive $4.7 million from the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program to complete municipal infrastructure projects.
“Improving our municipal infrastructure is the goal of the Municipal Capital Works program and the funding provided to the City of Mount Pearl is another step in achieving this,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “With a focus on road and water infrastructure, these projects will benefit all residents of the city.”
Along with water main and storm sewer upgrading, Mount Pearl will use this funding to improve 25 streets throughout the city.
“As our city continues to grow it is important we provide residents with a high level of service,” said the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and MHA for Mount Pearl South. “Through its quality of life and unique sense of spirit, Mount Pearl has so much to offer residents and visitors alike and these projects will further enhance our great city.”
The provincial and municipal governments will cost share these projects on a 70/30 provincial/municipal ratio.
“While Mount Pearl has the capacity to undertake many projects, it is important that the Provincial Government support the city’s efforts to improve municipal infrastructure,” said Steve Kent, MHA for Mount Pearl North. “These road and watermain improvements are certainly welcome and will complement many of the ongoing projects in Mount Pearl.”
Including both major thoroughfares and residential streets, the 2011 Municipal Capital Works projects for Mount Pearl are expected to commence immediately and be completed within the current construction season.
“Regular maintenance and upgrading of our municipal infrastructure is necessary in providing residents with continued and vital services,” said Paul Davis, MHA for Topsail. “Mount Pearl is a growing city and the various projects made possible through this investment will benefit all residents of the community for many years to come.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
