New Firefighting Vehicle Heading to Glovertown

As part of a continuing effort to modernize the infrastructure used by the municipal fire service, the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, has announced a new firefighting vehicle for the Town of Glovertown.

“Volunteer firefighters in our province represent more than 90 per cent of the entire municipal fire service,” said Minister O’Brien. “Through this year’s unprecedented investment in necessary fire department vehicles, we are focused on supporting the communities served by these dedicated men and women and the residents throughout rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Glovertown will receive a new pumper truck through a 90/10 cost-share arrangement with the Provincial Government. Public tenders for new firefighting vehicles will be let this summer, with delivery expected in 2012.

“The importance of the volunteer fire service cannot be overstated” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “The members of the Glovertown Volunteer Fire Department are committed to the safety and security of residents and give freely of their time to ensure the best possible service for the community. I congratulate the department and the town council on this significant achievement for Glovertown.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a historic investment in the municipal fire service. An investment of $3.9 million has been allocated for new firefighting vehicles, as well as a continued $1 million allocation to fund equipment needs to assist communities. With the addition of a new Provincial Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit to acknowledge the commitment of the men and women in the volunteer fire service, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $6 million towards the municipal fire service this year.
