Infrastructure Projects Announced for the Southern Shore
Three communities in the Southern Shore region will begin municipal infrastructure projects through an allocation of approximately $900,000 under the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program.
“Our government continues to work with municipalities to improve infrastructure throughout the province,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Municipal infrastructure projects, such as these, are an important way to support the communities and residents of rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Through the funding announced today, a number of roads in the community of Fermeuse will be upgraded and work will continue to repair a damaged seawall in Ferryland which offers protection from storm surge. Funding has also been provided to help renovate the community recreation centre in Witless Bay.
“These are important projects which will help ensure reliable infrastructure for residents of the Southern Shore,” said Keith Hutchings, MHA for Ferryland. “Significant benefits to area residents will result from this work including safer roads, a safer harbour facility and the revitalization of the recreation facility in Witless Bay.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
