New Firefighting Vehicle Announced for Clarenville

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced a new firefighting vehicle will be heading to the town of Clarenville.

“The Provincial Government is pleased to provide unprecedented financial support through Budget 2011 to support municipal fire services across the province,” said Minister O’Brien. “Helping municipalities and local service districts modernize community fire department vehicles is a focus for our government. It is just one of the ways we are supporting our volunteer firefighters in providing an improved level of safety for communities and residents.”

Clarenville will receive a new pumper truck through an 80/20 cost-share arrangement with the Provincial Government. Public tenders for new firefighting vehicles will be let this summer, with delivery expected in 2012.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of dedicated service for the Clarenville Fire Department – a monumental milestone for the community,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity North. “These volunteer firefighters are an integral part of the fabric of this town and help to ensure public safety throughout the region. This announcement of a new pumper truck for Clarenville certainly adds to the anniversary celebration and I am pleased to mark this significant achievement with the town.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a historic investment in the municipal fire service. An investment of $3.9 million has been allocated for new firefighting vehicles, as well as a continued $1 million allocation to fund equipment needs to assist communities. With the addition of a new Provincial Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit to acknowledge the commitment of the men and women in the volunteer fire service, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $6 million towards the municipal fire service this year.
