Municipal Capital Works Announced for Communities in Central Newfoundland

Communities in central Newfoundland will receive approximately $3.8 million for municipal infrastructure through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program.

“Central Newfoundland plays an important role in the economic life of our province,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “In recent years our government has invested heavily into communities of this region and I am pleased that we have continued these efforts through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program.”

The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor will receive funding to upgrade the town’s water treatment plant. Funding has also been allocated to Millertown to upgrade the town sewer system and to Badger to conduct a structural assessment of the community water tank.

“Grand Falls-Windsor has shown such resiliency in recent years and the continued support of the Provincial Government is certainly welcome,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans. “Further to this investment we have received significant support for important projects for the surrounding communities and I am pleased to see further infrastructure work for both Millertown and Badger.”

The community of Triton will receive funding to improve the swimming pool and upgrade the liftstation of the town sewer system, while Port Anson will receive funding for phase one of water and sewer improvements.

“Along with the benefits to Grand Falls-Windsor, this year’s Municipal Capital Works program will have a major impact on the lives of residents in Triton and Port Anson,” said Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor - Green Bay South. “The water and sewer work and swimming pool upgrades for Triton will benefit both homeowners and all those seeking recreational activity. Additional residents of Port Anson will benefit from water and sewer services as a result of this funding.”

Botwood and Point Leamington will also receive funding for water and sewer improvements. The sewage outfall in Botwood will be moved to a new location and in Point Leamington, the Woodworth’s Cove area will see sewer services extended to new residents, along with liftstation and outfall work.

“The continued commitment of our government to water and wastewater projects is critically important for smaller communities,” said Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits. “Residents of both Botwood and Point Leamington will see improved services as a result of these investments and I look forward to work commencing on these projects.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
