Southern Region to Receive Infrastructure Improvements

The Provincial Government will invest approximately $2 million into infrastructure projects for communities on the south coast of the province. Through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program, funding has been provided for a community centre and water and wastewater projects.

“Recognizing the need for improved municipal infrastructure, we have invested heavily into projects throughout Newfoundland and Labrador this year,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “I am pleased that through the Municipal Capital Works program, we are contributing to the lives of residents along the south coast in an important way. I am confident these projects will benefit the region for many years.”

The community of St. Jacques-Coombs Cove will be supported in the construction of a new community centre. This facility will serve as a venue for various residents’ events, including seniors and youth activities. In St. Albans, increased water storage capacity will be added to the current reservoir to provide more water during peak periods and alleviate water shortages. Burgeo, Channel-Port aux Basques and Isles aux Morts will also receive upgrades to their water and sewer systems.

“The addition of a community centre for residents of St. Jacques-Coombs Cove and neighbouring communities is fantastic news,” said Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. “As St. Albans continues to grow, this addition to the water reservoir will help the community meet the needs of both residents and local businesses. I look forward to work commencing on both these projects and the immeasurable benefits they will bring to the region.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
