Fire Departments in Woodstock and South Brook Receive Equipment Funding

Fire protection services in two communities will be enhanced, thanks to Provincial Government funding of more than $12,400. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced funding for the South Brook and Woodstock departments.

“These departments provide a great public service in ensuring the safety of residents in their communities,” said Minister O’Brien. “We are certainly pleased to help ensure these firefighters are protected as well with our continued focus on providing personal protective equipment for members.”

The fire department in Woodstock will benefit from approximately $5,480 to help purchase bunker clothing, boots and gloves.

“Our volunteer firefighters work hard to protect their families, friends and neighbours,” said Baie Verte - Springdale MHA Kevin Pollard. “We appreciate their valuable contribution to our community, and it is important that we take care of them as they work to take care of us.”

The South Brook Fire Department will receive approximately $6,960 to purchase and upgrade hose and ladders.

“This funding is very important to both the fire department and the people of South Brook,” said Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South. “The additional equipment will assist our firefighters in continuing to serve the town and protect residents.”

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for each fire department will be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under the 90/10 cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of more than $14,400.
