Tenders Awarded for Oil Tank Repair, Replacement and Certification

Through the Government Assistance Plan, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has awarded three contracts for the repair, replacement and certification of heating oil storage tanks for Inuit communities on the North Coast of Labrador.

The tender for oil tanks, fittings and repairs was awarded to Kerr Controls; Ornamental Concrete was the successful bidder to supply reinforced patio blocks used for tank foundations, and Pressure Pipe Steel Fabrication Ltd. was awarded the contract for tank installation, repair and certification.

Through a combination of financial and in-kind resources, participants of the Government Assistance Plan will see a substantial reduction in the necessary cost to meet environmental standards and make their oil tanks safer and more secure. When the plan was first announced, the maximum expense for participants was estimated to be $1,800. However as a result of the tenders awarded, the anticipated maximum cost incurred by participants has reduced significantly to approximately $1,000. Officials with the Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs will be contacting participants directly to provide details of individual expenses.

The process of shipping oil tanks and necessary parts has begun and is expected to be completed by early November.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, includes $1.5 million for an assistance plan for Inuit communities where homeowners face unique and difficult challenges associated with the registration of home heating oil tanks to meet compliance with Heating Oil Storage Tank Regulations.
