Program Improves Business Success through Improved Quality Controls
Businesses looking to increase the quality and productivity of their organizations benefited from attending the recent session entitled Quality: A Cornerstone to Business Success. The session, which was attended by more than 100 businesses and industry organizations, is a part of the Provincial Government’s Manufacturing Insights program, which is delivered in partnership with the Canadian Manufacturer’s & Exporters (CME) – Newfoundland and Labrador.
“More and more businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador are reducing costs and increasing productivity by becoming more efficient,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. “By implementing quality systems and best practices, companies can increase efficiencies, shed excess and facilitate growth.”
Through presentations and panel discussions, the event provided information for companies on measures to strengthen their operations. Dr. Jason Myers, President and Chief Executive Officer, CME, and Frank Koller, author of Spark: How Old-Fashioned Values Drive a Twenty-First Century Corporation, were the conference’s keynote speakers and highlighted the value of quality control in today’s economic environment.
“Having a conference focus on quality and quality control provides the opportunity to share experiences and learn from other businesses,” said David Turner, Quality Manager of St. John’s-based DFB Driver Inc. “The event was well-coordinated and I believe that there is a strong need to continue to have sessions of this nature. We need to learn from each others success and mistakes. It is how we learn to get better.”
In addition to the CME, other partners involved in the delivery of the Manufacturing Insights program include Canada Business Newfoundland and Labrador and the Federal Government. Since being established in 2007, 43 sessions have been held throughout the province, providing participants with information on how to reduce waste and increase profitability.
“Focus on quality is essential whether you are selling a product or service locally or internationally,” said David Haire, Vice-President, Lean and Best Practices, CME. “Through our partnership with the Provincial Government, customers are better able to maximize quality, cost, and speed of delivery. If businesses do not have quality built into their processes they will pay for it at the expense of cost and delivery. Today’s economy is too competitive to cheapen on quality control.”
In fall 2011, several Manufacturing Insights information sessions are scheduled in various communities. Each will equip participants with information on possible measures to improve their operations. A full listing of the sessions is enclosed in the backgrounder below.
“Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador businesses are benefiting from the relationship forged between the Provincial Government and our partners, including the CME,” said Minister Hutchings. “This collective force has facilitated extremely productive sessions and involved more than 1,000 participants who are targeting greater growth and development of their enterprises. I encourage those interested in improving their business practices to attend upcoming sessions.”
