Turks Gut Heritage House Receives Funding for Improvements and Maintenance

With a Provincial Government contribution of $26,520 through the Job Creation Partnership program, four individuals have been employed to improve and maintain the Turks Gut Heritage House in Marysvale, Conception Bay.

"I am pleased to see this worthwhile project being completed through the Job Creation Partnership program,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “Each project provides numerous benefits to the communities in which they are completed, while those employed gain new skills and experiences in an effort to help them attain long-term, meaningful employment.”

Over a period of 12 weeks, the Turks Gut Heritage House will undertake the following improvements: installation of safety rails; construction and installation of story boards; repairs to the roof and storage room; and, various painting and landscaping. The project began in mid July.

“This investment will go a long way in helping maintain the Turks Gut Heritage House for years to come,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Preserving the heritage of Harbour Main enables present and future generations to benefit from and understand the historical contributions of the area. As well, tourists will get a first-hand look at how residents of the area lived and worked throughout the years.”

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.

“This project carried out under this Job Creation Partnership program is of great benefit to all area residents,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works and MHA for Harbour Main. “Aside from the obvious benefit of local employment, the project will have created lasting benefits for the region through community infrastructure and heritage improvements.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
