Humber Valley Receives Job Creation Partnership Funding

Through a Provincial Government contribution of $134,416 under the Job Creation Partnership program, 14 individuals are gaining valuable work experience in the Humber Valley region.

"The funding highlighted today provides organizations in the Humber Valley region with the necessary financial resources to hire individuals to undertake projects of great significance to the community,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “By partnering with the Provincial Government, each organization has the means to accomplish their goals, while providing meaningful employment opportunities for 14 individuals."

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.

“These projects will play an important role in the preservation of heritage infrastructure in the Humber Valley region,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “A strong economy makes for a strong community, and positions such as these will enhance local tourism and support our continued efforts to protect and preserve the heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The Jackson’s Arm Heritage Society received $24,416 to hire two individuals to work as collection management personnel with the society; St. Michael’s All Angels Church in Pollard’s Point received $45,000 to hire six individuals to assist in renovations on the church; and, the Town of Reidville received $65,000 to hire six individuals to complete renovations to the town council office and fire hall.

“Through these Job Creation Partnership projects important work is being completed by each participating organization,” said Darryl Kelly, MHA for Humber Valley. “This is another example of our government’s ongoing commitment to community-based organizations that focus on supporting local and regional priorities. In addition to providing valuable work experience, the projects will have long-term positive impacts on this community.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
