Job Creation Partnership Projects Enhance Tourism and Heritage in Burgeo-LaPoile District

The Provincial Government today highlighted the approval of six projects in the District of Burgeo-LaPoile where 39 individuals are gaining valuable work experience and utilizing new skills. The projects were made possible through an investment of $422,939 under the Job Creation Partnership program.

Through these projects, 11 participants in Rose Blanche are working as site operators, skilled carpenters, and interpreters to provide guided lighthouse tours; seven individuals in Port aux Basques are working to clean up, restore, and develop areas throughout the tourism season; four individuals in Port aux Basques are assisting with the operation of a drop-in youth centre; 14 participants in Isle aux Morts are working as interpreters, visitors centre operators, and trail workers; two people in Margaree have been hired as interpreters and maintenance workers; and one participant in Port aux Basques is working as a coordinator for the Race to the Sea regional tourism event.

"I am pleased to see such worthwhile projects being completed through the Job Creation Partnership program,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “In addition to 39 individuals gaining valuable work experience, these projects will have long-term positive impacts on their communities by helping to promote their unique heritage for visitors here at home and from around the world."

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.

“Given the importance of the tourism industry to this area, these projects will help to secure the long-term viability of the industry,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Economic development is an important part of strengthening communities on the Southwest Coast, and it also positions the area as an important tourism destination within Newfoundland and Labrador.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
