Projects Supporting Tourism Underway in Bonavista South Area

Through eight ongoing Job Creation Partnership projects, 42 individuals are gaining valuable work experience in the Bonavista South area. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, and the Honourable Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South, today highlighted the projects which amount to an investment of over $338,000.

“By partnering with the Provincial Government, seven community-based organizations in the region are helping to preserve local heritage, promote tourism and enhance infrastructure,” said Minister King. “Job Creation Partnership projects are a strong example of how our government supports non-profit and community-based organizations to undertake initiatives that meet local and regional needs.”

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.

“Investments under the Job Creation Partnership program are truly making a difference in communities throughout the Bonavista region,” said MHA Fitzgerald. “Project participants are gaining valuable experience while supporting important tourism initiatives in their communities. I am extremely pleased to see these investments taking place as they support program delivery for many organizations.”

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased with this investment as it enhances the tourism industry in the Bonavista region.

“Each project highlighted today is a fine example of great work being undertaken by countless organizations throughout the Bonavista South area in support of tourism for our province,” said Minister French. “We look forward to the success of all these projects, and anticipate that hundreds of visitors from this province and around the world will experience the many great benefits as a result of this investment.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
