Provincial Government Congratulates Safe Kids Canada
The Provincial Government is pleased to acknowledge another successful observance of Safe Kids Week 2011 in Newfoundland and Labrador, held this year May 30 to June 3. Coordinated by Safe Kids Canada, Safe Kids Week is an annual national public campaign intended to raise awareness around the frequency and severity of preventable childhood injuries.
The theme of this year’s week was Give Your Kid a Boost, which focused on child passenger safety and the importance of booster seats.
“In 2008, the Provincial Government mandated that children of a certain height and weight be secured in a booster seat, when travelling in private and other passenger vehicles throughout the province,” said the Honourable Harry Harding, Minister of Government Services. “This complemented existing child safety seat requirements for infants and younger children, and was a significant step in ensuring that our children are safely secured.”
In recent years, the Provincial Government has made important investments in the areas of injury prevention and in 2011, the Department of Government Services will work with the Department of Health and Community Services on a multimedia campaign focused on booster seat safety.
“This government is committed to protecting the health and well-being of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services. “Promoting wellness and injury prevention is an important aspect of that commitment. In fact, injury prevention is one of the eight priority areas of our Provincial Wellness Plan, through which our government invests $4.1 million a year.”
