Premier Announces $6 Million for Sport and Recreation Facility in Pasadena

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that a new multi-purpose sport and recreation facility will be built in the Town of Pasadena as a result of a Provincial Government investment of $6.16 million, with the town contributing $1.54 million of the total project cost of $7.7 million.

Joining the Premier were the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs; the Honourable Thomas W. Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East; Darryl Kelly, MHA for Humber Valley; and Gary Bishop, Mayor of Pasadena. The project is cost-shared at an 80/20 ratio between the Provincial Government and the Town of Pasadena through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program.

“This multi-purpose facility will provide residents of Pasadena and surrounding area with greater opportunities to get active and make healthy choices for themselves and their families,” said Premier Dunderdale. “Active and healthy lifestyles of our residents benefit the entire province and through projects like this new recreation facility, our government is providing the necessary infrastructure for strong and healthy communities.”

The Pasadena multi-purpose facility will be approximately 1,400 square metres and will include both two-story and one-story space, a therapy pool, rock climbing wall, walking track and community kitchen. The facility will also include areas for family, youth and senior activities as well as offices and a reception area. Following the principles of the Provincial Government’s Energy Plan, the facility will be designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver rating for energy usage and conservation.

“Our municipalities are working hard to provide enhanced services to their residents and we are pleased to support their efforts,” said Minister O’Brien. “This new facility for Pasadena is a testament to the efforts of the town to bring such a facility to reality and will be a significant addition to the municipal infrastructure of the region.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador includes $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.

“Pasadena has so much to offer and the addition of this facility will enhance the lives of residents,” said Minister Marshall. “I am very pleased with how all partners have worked together to ensure a positive outcome for the people of Pasadena.”

Along with the indoor space provided by the multi-purpose facility, space will be provided for outdoor walking trails and activities.

“A growing community must be able to provide its residents with the services they desire, especially when those services form part of healthy lifestyle choices,” said MHA Kelly. “A new recreation and sport complex has been one of the key facilities requested by both residents and the town council and I am pleased to say this facility will soon be available to residents of Pasadena and those in the surrounding area.”

Consultants will now be engaged to prepare contract packages for the upcoming tender call. Completion of the facility is scheduled for December 2013.

“Today is a great day for the Town of Pasadena and its residents as we have greatly added to the fabric of our community,” said Mayor Bishop. “We are extremely excited about the addition of this facility and wait with great optimism for its opening. This will be a tremendous project for the community and we are pleased to work with the Provincial Government to make it happen.”

Along with this investment in Pasadena, the Provincial Government has allocated significant resources to encourage residents to participate in active and healthy lifestyles and recognizes the importance of recreational infrastructure. In addition to funding for municipal infrastructure projects, Budget 2011 included $11.5 million to support recreation and sport throughout the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
