Highway
Upgrades Headed For Northern Peninsula
Motorists travelling
Route 431 on the Northern Peninsula can expect a safer
and more enjoyable driving experience thanks to road
improvements scheduled to be carried out this summer.
The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation
and Works, announced the tender call for the upcoming
roadwork today.
"This latest tender is a
further example of our commitment to improving
infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,"
said Minister Hedderson. "From one end of this province
to the other, we have been making unprecedented
investments in highways, public buildings, marine and
other infrastructure and we will continue to invest
strategically in projects that benefit Newfoundlanders
and Labradorians."
The tender is for the
upgrading and paving of sections of Route 431, between
Route 430 at Wiltondale and the Gros Morne National Park
Boundary. This project will be cost-shared 50/50 between
the Provincial and Federal Governments under the federal
Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
"The Williams Government
has made significant investments in the road network on
the Northern Peninsula over the past number of years,"
said Wally Young, MHA for St. Barbe. "This area of the
province, near Gros Morne National Park, sees a high
number of tourists every year and these improvements
will provide a better driving experience for residents
and tourists alike."
Highway upgrades are part
of the Williams Government's overall infrastructure
program valued at more than $4 billion over the next
several years which includes investments in healthcare,
education, justice, social housing, transportation,
municipal and other provincial infrastructure.
