Torbay Bypass Nearing Finish Line
In preparation for the opening of the Torbay Bypass,
a 1.4 kilometre section of Torbay Road, between RCAF
Road and Karon Drive, will be widened from two lanes to
five. This project will alleviate traffic congestion in
the area. The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of
Transportation and Works, announced the tender call for
this work today.
"Since the Torbay Bypass project was announced in the
spring of 2007 we have been working diligently towards
its completion," said Minister Hedderson. "This most
recent tender brings this project one step closer to
fruition and is a further example of the Williams
Government's commitment to investing in important
regional infrastructure."
The total cost of the Torbay Bypass is estimated at
$20 million. Of this amount, $10 million is being
cost-shared 50/50 by the Provincial and Federal
Governments under the Canada Strategic Infrastructure
Fund. The remaining $10 million is being funded solely
by the Provincial Government bringing the total
Provincial Government contribution to this project to
$15 million.
"People in the region are anxiously awaiting the
completion of the Torbay Bypass," said Kevin Parsons,
MHA for Cape St. Francis. "Once opened to traffic, this
new road will help reduce traffic congestion along
Torbay Road and make for more efficient movement of
people and goods throughout the Northeast Avalon Region.
Area communities are continuing to grow and through the
construction of this bypass, we are ensuring that
transportation infrastructure will meet the needs of
residents into the future."
It is anticipated the Torbay Bypass will be completed
and open to traffic in the fall of 2010.
