February 8, 2010Tender to Help
Clear the Way for CBS Bypass Completion
The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of
Transportation and Works, today announced the calling of
a tender for the clearing of trees and shrubs from the
highway corridor of the Conception Bay South (CBS)
Bypass Road extension from Legion Road, to where it will
join the Conception Bay Highway, Route 60, at Seal Cove
– a total distance of approximately 5.6 kilometers.
"The work outlined in this tender will clear the highway
corridor for the long anticipated extension and ultimate
completion of the CBS Bypass," said Minister Hedderson.
"Once this work has been completed, we will be able to
begin construction on the road itself. Once completed
the CBS Bypass extension will lead to more efficient
traffic flow and a more enjoyable driving experience for
area motorists, especially for daily commuters."
The CBS Bypass extension project, including this tender
for the clearing of right of way, is being cost-shared
50/50 by the Provincial and Federal Governments through
the Canadian Strategic Infrastructure Fund.
"This is an exciting announcement for the people of the
CBS region and anyone who will have an occasion to use
this highway," said the Honourable Terry French, MHA for
Conception Bay South. "The CBS Bypass is an important
piece of regional highway infrastructure and people have
been looking forward to its completion for many years.
This tender for clearing of the highway corridor is a
major step toward bringing the completion of this
highway from a dream to a reality."
The Department of Transportation and Works plans to call
tenders and begin construction of this highway extension
in the spring of 2010. It is expected that the CBS
Bypass extension will be completed and open to the
public in late 2011.
