Media Advisory: Australian High Commissioner
to Make Special Presentation to Provincial Government

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, will accept a replica of Sir Joseph Banks Newfoundland Journal of 1766, to be presented by the High Commissioner of Australia, His Excellency Justin Brown.

The event will take place tomorrow (Friday, November 26) in the Media Centre, Ground Floor, East Block, Confederation Building, beginning at 10:45 a.m.

While visiting Newfoundland and Labrador in 1766, Sir Joseph Banks kept a journal with illustrations of his discoveries of flora and fauna which has become known as The Banks Journal. Following his visit here, Sir Joseph visited Australia, where he became the first to document in great detail previously unknown botanical specimens and species in that country.

The presentation is one of several activities being undertaken by the High Commission to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and Canada.
