Burin-Placentia West Area Receives $15,000 for Recreational Infrastructure

The Towns of Baine Harbour and Fox Cove-Mortier on the Burin Peninsula will improve their recreational infrastructure with the help of a total of $15,000 provided through the Provincial Government's 2010 Capital Grant Program.

"About $9,000 will be provided to assist with the purchase of equipment for Baine Harbour's community playground and about $6,000 has been earmarked to facilitate roof repairs and washroom upgrades at the community centre in Fox Cove-Mortier," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Both these investments are designed to provide safe, inviting environments in which area residents can engage in physical activity and be encouraged to adopt more active, healthy lifestyles."

Baine Harbour and Fox Cove-Mortier are among more than 40 municipalities, recreation commissions, and community-based organizations throughout the province which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

"This investment will increase family-oriented recreational opportunities in both communities," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, MHA for Burin-Placentia West. "Increasing access to facilities which encourage physical activity amongst our citizens in rural areas is fundamental to promoting well-being amongst our residents."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and programming.
