November 15-21 Proclaimed Archives Week

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, has joined with the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives (ANLA) to proclaim this week (November 15-21) as Archives Week in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Archival records represent our collective history, and we commend the people who work tirelessly to preserve the documentation of our past so that present and future generations can have access to it," said Minister French. "Archives Week is a time to highlight the work of professional archivists, and community-based volunteers, and to encourage the public to check out what is available — on site and online — to help in their research and their efforts to learn more about our fascinating history."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides $50,000 in operational support to ANLA through the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) to assist with the delivery of programs and services to its members across the province.

"We appreciate the Provincial Government's financial support so that the responsibilities of preserving and making available the documentary heritage of our province can be fulfilled," said ANLA President Stephanie Harlick. "This year, during Archives Week, there will be several events taking place to celebrate the occasion, including lectures and open houses."

Since 1983, ANLA has been active in providing and promoting education and training for archivists, providing advisory services, administering grants, publishing a regular newsletter, and promoting public awareness of the value of the province's archival records.
