World's Top Four Women's Hockey Teams to
Compete for Coveted 4 Nations Cup

Some of the best women hockey players in the world are in Newfoundland and Labrador this week as they prepare to compete for the 2010 4 Nations Cup, being held in St. John's and Clarenville, November 9-13.

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is hosting a special Team Canada reception this evening (Friday, November 5) at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. The reception will serve as an introduction to the eight-game tournament, which features the world's top four women's hockey teams — Canada, the United States, Sweden and Finland.

"This highly-anticipated hockey tournament will provide our residents with a first-hand look at the incredible talent of these world-class hockey players," said Minister French. "But it means so much more than that. The development camps and activities being held in conjunction with this event will also serve to inspire many young women to participate in physical activity, get involved with organized sport, and pursue their athletic dreams. I encourage everyone to get out, see as many games as you can, and participate in this exciting international women's hockey event."

In August, the Provincial Government announced a $200,000 investment in support of three Hockey Canada events being held in Newfoundland and Labrador: the National Junior Team Development Camp, held August 3-6 at Mile One Centre; the 4 Nations Cup, and the 2011 TELUS Cup National Midget Hockey Tournament, which will take place April 18-24. The events are being held in the province to recognize the 75th anniversary of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador, one of Hockey Canada's 13 branches across the country.

"The long wait is over, and the best four women's hockey teams in the world will now showcase the game in our province," said Gerry Evans, President of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador. "We are looking forward to witnessing some exciting hockey and we expect this event to significantly impact the continued growth of women's hockey in our association."
