Cultural Sector Receives Additional Funding
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
has provided an additional $54,885 to organizations and individuals
within the province's cultural sector, through the 2010 Cultural
Economic Development Program (CEDP).
"The Provincial Government is committed to
supporting this province's diverse cultural industries, enabling our
professional artists to generate and promote their work," said the
Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
"These latest investments provide funding to a number of cultural
activities in the theatre, film, dance, literary and visual arts
sectors, and will assist with the continued growth of this significant
contributor to the economy of our province."
In addition to CEDP funding previously
announced for the cultural sector, recent investments include:
- Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and
Development
— $15,000 to offset costs
associated with marketing and program development in preparation for
a three-day international conference entitled Culture, Place and
Identity at the Heart of Regional Development, to be held October
13-15, 2011.
DRC Publishing
— $10,000
to assist with the cost associated with website creation, including
e-commerce and training to undertake in-house updates.
Film Producers Association of Newfoundland
— $6,000 to assist with running a series
of animation workshops in St. John's to further enhance development
opportunities within the film sector.
Exploits Valley Economic Development Corporation
— $5,000 to offset costs associated with
the Art Ex countdown launch, aimed at building brand awareness for
its main event, scheduled for August 2011.
East Rock Crew
—$5,000 to
offset costs associated with presenting Hustle to Get Here 2,
Atlantic Canada's largest Hip-Hop conference and competition, held
September 17-19, 2010.
Mary Walsh, Lois Brown
—
$3,885 to help with the cost of participating in a professional
development opportunity for theatre professionals at Nightswimming's
Pure Research Project, to be held October 22-24 in Toronto.
Gerald Squires
— $3,000
to offset costs related to the development of a website that will
offer a comprehensive archive of Gerald Squires' works and provide
information about his life and career as an artist.
Elena Popova
— $3,000 to
assist with the development of a website to generate new
opportunities and sales, primarily in national and international
markets.
Pedlar Press
— $2,200 to
help send author Craig Francis Power on a reading tour of Winnipeg,
Kingston, Toronto and Vancouver to market his debut novel,
Blood
Relatives.
Don McKay
— $1,800
to help with costs associated with a reading and lecture tour at six
venues in Italy connected with the publication of a volume of his
poetry, which has been translated into Italian.
Budget 2010:
The Right Investments — For
Our Children and Our Future
provides about $2.5 million through the
CEDP to support arts, cultural and heritage initiatives throughout the
province, with $1.2 million earmarked for the arts and culture sectors
and $1.3 provided to the heritage sector. CEDP applications are
considered based on the strength of the business plans, vision, and
potential development within the sector.
