Arts and Letters Submission Deadline is November 26

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that November 26, 2010, is the deadline for submissions for the 2011 Arts and Letters Awards program.

"For almost 60 years, the Arts and Letters Awards have helped to cultivate and develop the creative talent of artists throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister French. "The program continues to encourage emerging talent, as well as support the work of the province's most respected visual artists, musicians and writers who have established successful careers in their chosen fields."

Prizes are awarded in two divisions, junior and senior, and in a number of categories, including literary arts, visual arts and musical composition. Total prize money for this year's program is $46,000. A total of 36 awards of $1,000 each will be awarded in the senior division, and 35 awards of $250 each in the junior division. Prize money awarded for the coveted Percy Janes First Novel Award is $1,500.

The Arts and Letters Awards program receives $140,000 annually through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. For more information on the program, and the criteria for application, visit: www.gov.nl.ca/artsandletters.

Since the launch of the province's cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador (2006), the Provincial Government has more than doubled its investment in the Arts and Letters Awards program, and tripled its annualized support for all provincial arts and cultural organizations and programming, from $3 million to $9 million.
