More than $19,000 Invested in Trinity-Bay de Verde Recreation Programs

Municipalities and recreation organizations in the Trinity-Bay de Verde area have received $19,085 through the province's Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) program, which is designed to assist with the cost of delivering recreation and active-living programs to residents in small communities throughout the province.

"The 2010 Community Recreation Development Program is providing more than $576,000 to over 180 smaller communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to enable people of all ages to participate in recreational and physical activity," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "By offering our support to local recreation and sport committees that encourage residents to get physically active, we are one step closer to fulfilling the objectives of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy, Newfoundland and Labrador ."

Investments in Trinity-Bay de Verde area are as follows:

  • Town of Hant's Harbour — $5,170;
  • Heart's Delight-Islington Volunteer Recreation Commission — $3,575;
  • New Perlican Recreation Commission — $2,750;
  • Hopeall Sports and Recreation — $1,705
  • Town of Heart's Content — $1,595;
  • Association for Youth and Leisure Time Activities (Lower Island Cove) — $1,320;
  • Town of Bay de Verde — $1,100;
  • Grates Cove Recreation — $1,100; and,
  • Red Head Cove Recreation Association — $770

"This funding represents a very important investment in the health and recreational needs of the people of the area," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, MHA for Trinty-Bay de Verde. "It is important that residents in all parts of our province, particularly our rural regions, have access to programs that will enhance their lives and contribute to their overall well being."

Community Recreation Development Grants are available to communities with populations of 6,000 or less. Applications are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in the province's recreation and sport strategy. These priorities include providing increased access to programming for all residents; making the best use of community facilities; building community capacities, and promoting the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides approximately $7 million — including over $1.2 million in new funding — to improve existing recreation and sport programming and to introduce new initiatives. Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development.
