Humber Valley Region Receives $17,270 in Recreational Development Funding

Organizations responsible for delivering recreational programming in the Humber Valley area have received $17,270 through the Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) Program, which is designed to help offset the cost of delivering active-living programs to residents in small communities throughout the province.

"An investment in recreational programming is an investment in the present and future health and well-being of our citizens," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Community Recreation Development Grants are available to communities of 6,000 and less, and are therefore of particular benefit to people living in rural areas of the province."

The 2010 CRDG Program is providing more than $576,000 to over 180 smaller communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to enable people of all ages to participate in recreational and physical activity.

Investments in Humber Valley area are as follows:

  • Sop's Arm Local Service District — $5,060;
  • Town of Deer Lake — $4,125;
  • Town of Cormack — $3,575;
  • Town of Reidville — $3,300; and,
  • Town of Hampden — $1,210.

"The funding delivered through this program helps small communities in our area support recreational programs that benefit many people," said Humber Valley MHA Darryl Kelly. "I welcome this investment as part of the Provincial Government's efforts to promote physical activity."

CRDG applications are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in the province's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). Those priorities include providing increased access to recreational programming for all residents; building community capacity; making the best use of community facilities; and, promoting the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides over $1.2 million in new funding to improve existing programming and introduce initiatives which support the goals of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador. Since the launch of the strategy, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development.
