Over $25,000 Invested in Lewisporte Recreation

Recreation programs in the Lewisporte area have received $25,190 in support through the Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) Program, designed to help offset the cost of delivering recreation and active-living programs to residents in small communities throughout the province.

"The 2010 Community Recreation Development Grant Program is providing in excess of $576,000 to over 180 smaller communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to enable people of all ages to participate in recreational activity," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "By providing accessible, inclusive, active-living programs, municipalities and recreation committees are able to contribute to the overall well-being of residents."

Investments in the Lewisporte area are as follows:

  • Horwood Recreation Commission — $4,840;
  • Town of Lewisporte — $4,730;
  • Comfort Cove-Newstead Recreation Committee — $3,355;
  • Norris Arm North Recreation Committee — $3,300;
  • Town of Birchy Bay — $2,970;
  • Town of Norris Arm — $2,860;
  • Loon Bay Recreation Committee — $1,595; and,
  • Town of Embree — $1,540.

"Our government is making significant strides towards promoting and improving the accessibility of recreation and active-living programs for residents throughout our province," said Lewisporte MHA Wade Verge. "This grant program will further contribute to supporting increased participation in physical activity among our population."

Community Recreation Development Grants are available to communities of 6,000 or fewer. Applications are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). These priorities include providing increased access to programming for all residents; making the best use of community facilities; building community capacities; and, promoting the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides over $1.2 million in new funding to improve existing programming and introduce new initiatives which support the goals of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador. Since the launch of the strategy, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development.
